There are just so many options when you’re choosing wood. But, aside from purely aesthetic considerations, one thing to bear in mind is the functional strength of different woods. For example, it might look like a good idea to save money by using a softwood for the sub-frame of a deck, but would it be capable of supporting a hardwood super-structure?
